The High Horse
Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He shall lift you up. (Jam 4:10)
A “Destrier War Horse” or a “High Horse” was used in medieval times by royalty and knights as it stood approximately 12 or more inches higher than other horses. It drew attention to all and it helped give an advantage to a soldier participating in medieval events. We use the term today in another way. It means to be “superior to” or “better than” another. In other words, it means “haughty” and “self-righteous.” PRIDEFUL .
I have witnessed (have you?) some Christians who have been saved for a long time, or maintain a certain ‘status’ in the church, “look down their noses at” new or younger Christians. They ride a “the high horse” because of their longevity as a believer or a selected member of their church. When one starts comparing themselves with another (2 Cor 10:12), they may have allowed the sin of pride to creep into their lives. God’s word says, “The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward (meaning 'perverse' or 'disobedient') mouth, do I hate.” (Pro 8:13)
Brothers / Sisters, let us ask the Lord for humility and pray one for another on this matter. Me too, if you don’t mind. I covet your prayers. Our Lord Jesus made it plain in the following verse. “And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.” (Matt 23:12) Jesus also said, “And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:31)
“. . . and pray one for another . . .” (James 5:16)
