“Thankful for the Mercy of God”
*Bro Billie K Friel • Mt Juliet, Tennessee • 11/18/2024
“For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.” (Ps 86:5)
If people were asked to list the things for which they were thankful, most would not include the “Mercy of God.” I point your attention this “Month of Thanksgiving” to the 86th Psalm. “Mercy” is mentioned five times in this Psalm. Think about this:
• Attribute of Mercy. Verse 5 says God is “plentious (abundant) in mercy.” One of the prime features of God’s nature is that He is merciful.
• Accessibility of Mercy. Verse 13 says “great is Thy mercy.” God’s Mercy is to all. His mercy is eternal, free, and extends to the grave. Great!
• Appropriation of Mercy. Verse 5 says God gives mercy to “unto all them that call upon thee.” The thief on the cross asked for mercy. Even though God’s Mercy is to all, you must ask for mercy. The cry for mercy by Bartimaeus stopped Jesus in His tracks. “Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me.” (Matt 10:46-47)
• Appreciation of Mercy. Verses 12-13 says “I will praise thee, O Lord my God . . . great is thy mercy toward me:” Those receiving mercy show their appreciation by showing mercy. “Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.” (Matt.5:7).
Picture this scene: Each of us will stand before the ‘great Judge.’ We are guilty. The sentence is given. Suddenly, the Judge rises from his chair, removes his robe, and stands beside the accused. He pays the fine.
Mercy is not receiving what we do deserve.
Are you thankful for God’s Mercy?
Is there someone to whom you can be merciful?
